Food and Support Drop In

Saturday 26th February 2011 2:48 PM

From the February HOPE Together national news:

http://www.hopetogether.org.uk/Publisher/Article.aspx?ID=245535

HALIFAX CHURCHES' FOOD AND SUPPORT DROP-IN
S
EES CLIENTS ASKING FOR PRAYER
The Halifax food and support drop-in, now in its third year, is now offering prayer as part of the free service for people who attend. Volunteers were thrilled in November to witness a large response to a talk from Barry Woodward, a transformed ex-offender and addict. Now clients have been ticking a box as they arrive, selecting to receive prayer while they are there. All this has come about because churches across Calderdale decided to join together and address the needs in their area.

The drop-in has distributed over 8,000 parcels since it began in 2008, the same year as HOPE 08, and receives around a hundred clients each Saturday morning. Over sixty local churches now support the project and are represented through 30 - 50 volunteers each week and regular donations.

The venue has never run short of provisions, nearby businesses and farm shops donate food, and some churchgoers even tithe their weekly shopping budget to the cause. The service enables vulnerable people to access food and support which will help them to move on from their situation; which may be one of homelessness, addiction, debt or seeking asylum.

Kate Fawcett, who is on the management committee of the Food and Support Drop-in, said: "It's so exciting to see how many people are taking up the offer of prayer. Miracles are really happening and eight clients have been baptised. We had one girl who cried because she had never had anyone be so nice to her and we have seen hard drug addicts find peace and become keen to help others.

"This would never have worked if Christians had not joined together from across the whole of Calderdale. We are more effective together and the unity that has been created is mind blowing - a real chance for denominational labels to disappear. We are just Halifax people doing God's work, with a desire for others to know that a new life is available through Jesus."

The Drop-in was set up under the banner of the Christian's together initiative and HOPE Calderdale as a result of a few people, with various knowledge and backgrounds, recognising the needs and discussing a response. The team want to tackle the underlying issues that cause the need for food in the first place and this is where the support element comes in. The Drop-in has created successful partnerships with organisations like Horton housing, which provide a support worker every other week. It acts as a signpost to all sorts of other support, including Alpha courses. Starting this year debt management advice will be available from church volunteers who have been trained by Christians Against Poverty.

Roy Crowne, Executive Director of HOPE, said: "I love it when I hear of projects like this where so many churches are working together to meet the very real needs of local people - so much more is achieved this way. Our vision, as HOPE, is to see churches in every area of the UK join together, regardless of differences, to share Jesus' love with their communities through words and actions."

On the 19th March a celebration called Matthew's gathering will provide an opportunity for the people of Calderdale to thank God for the work He is doing in their locality. The event, taking place in Ebenezer church, will involve a service that clients can attend in the morning, an afternoon of testimonies and reflections and then an evening of praise and thanks which will go late into the night.

Flash Mob?

Saturday 19th February 2011 5:27 PM

There are plans on Good Friday to hold Flash Mob Easter in Halifax town centre. This has caused some debate, some confusion, some support and some questions!

Firstly what kind of Flash Mob are we talking about? Random stuff going on across the town - in this case to help the fantastic people out shopping on one of the most important days in the Christian year to see Good Friday as more than a Bank Holiday!

It will be whatever people say they would like to do - someone with a guitar singing "the old rugged cross" and then wandering on his way; a group giving out hot cross buns to passers by for ten minutes; a drama that happens, people watch and then move on; people offering prayer for healing on a street corner; and a grand finale at 2.30pm bread and wine (well fruit juice) offered to people all across town as an act to re-engage at a time when we remember the temple curtain torn in two and the love and acceptance of God, through Jesus, becoming available to all not just the religious few!

We have seen on the Internet FlashMobs working well - the T-Mobile adverts at Heathrow and the Hallelujah chorus in the shopping mall are both fantastic
- it would be great to have something like that in Halifax, but whatever happens we know it will cause the Easter message to be made known.

HOPE is all about the church engaging with people - FlashMob is just one way; drama, music, hot cross buns and communion are another; projects such as Street Angels, Food and Support Drop In, EDGE Youth work, counselling, pregnancy care are others - God is for people and is not just interested in what we do in our church buildings!

So come and FlashMob with us on Good Friday - celebrate God's love available to all and not for those religious enough to get it!

After a very successful first night with over 120 people in Costa Coffee, including many regulars and Christmas shoppers, the next Costa Coffee Church is on Thursday 17th February, 6.30pm - 8pm at Costa Coffee, Woolshops. The theme is "Debt - the Christmas Hangover" - attached is some publicity for this event...

HOPE FlashMob Easter

As we plan to re-launch HOPE Calderdale over the Easter weekend we would like to include your Easter outreach events as part of this Borough wide re-launch. We know that there are walks of witness, Easter morning prayer events, etc.

In Halifax we are planning a FlashMob Easter - a series of "random" events across the town throughout Good Friday. It could be someone with a guitar singing an Easter hymn or a drama or handing out hot cross buns or offering prayer - whatever people can contribute! We will then finish at 2.30pm with a flashmob communion - around 5 teams across the town handing out bread and fruit juice chatting to and praying with people. If you can offer anything along these lines or know anyone who can email me or come along to the HOPE Calderdale meeting on Monday 21st February, 7.15pm at Halifax Salvation Army.

Big Response

Over 120 people are now booked in for both day and evening of The Big Response day with people from across Yorkshire and the North East of England. With the various cuts in public sector services this is the time for the church to respond strategically to the Big Society agenda and be seen as an organisation who delivers and delivers well! At the time of emailing we can accommodate another 150 or so people so do try and be there... Wednesday 23rd November, 10.30am - 4.15pm and 7.30pm - 9.15pm (email me if you would like a booking form)

Christian Resources Exhibition

Following last year's very successful event the date is set for Saturday 12th November - please add the date to your calendar! 10am - 3pm an exhibition showing many of the things the church is up to in Calderdale helping impact the Borough and beyond. To book a stall, at a cost of £10, please email paul@streetangels.org.uk .

Then at 7.30pm on Saturday 12th November a Calderdale Celebration with guest speaker Debra Green of Redeeming our Communities - www.redeemingourcommunities.org.uk - Debra is an amazing woman with a heart to see the church working with and praying for agencies such as the police in order to see communities transformed. A night not to miss!

Both these events are at The King's Centre, Park Road, Halifax.
